Recent AANP Letter to Congress Expresses Support for ICAN Act

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and other healthcare organizations recently sent a letter to the leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives outlining their strong support for H.R. 2713, the Improving Care and Access to Nurses (ICAN) Act. 

The bill, introduced into Congress in April 2023, would “amend titles XVIII and XIX of the Social Security Act to increase access to services provided by advanced practice registered nurses under the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and for other purposes.” 

According to the text of the bill, the ICAN Act would also: 

  • Expand access to cardiac rehabilitation programs and pulmonary rehabilitation programs under Medicare program 
  • Permit nurse practitioners to satisfy medicare documentation requirement for coverage of certain shoes for individuals with diabetes
  • Streamline care delivery in skilled nursing facilities and nursing facilities
  • Authorize Medicare and Medicaid inpatient hospital patients to be under the care of a nurse practitioner
