We’re going back in time to showcase the rapid progression of the NP profession.
1965—The NP Profession is Born
In 1965, Loretta Ford, EdD, PNP, FAAN, and Henry Silver, MD founded the first nurse practitioner program in the United States at the University of Colorado. This education track was created as a solution to the nationwide primary care provider shortage caused by increasing healthcare access for low-income Americans.
1973—Educational Opportunities Expand
By the mid 1970s, more than 65 NP programs across the United States are established and rapidly expanding. The American Nurses Association (ANA) develops the Council of Primary Care Nurse Practitioners, and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) is created.
1983—The NP Boom
A 1983 survey shows that there are approximately 22,000 to 24,000 NPs in the United States. The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is born in 1985, and quickly springs into action to advocate for affordable malpractice insurance for NPs.
1987—Big Investments
By 1987, the American government has poured over $100 million into NP educational programs. By the early 1990s, the AANP collaborates with the Royal College of Nursing UK, to develop the role of NPs internationally. Qualitative research repeatedly shows the profound benefit NPs have on the global healthcare system.
1988—Dr. Margaret Fitzgerald Founds Fitzgerald Health Education Associates
Starting with small study sessions held at Dr. Fitzgerald’s dining room table, the NP-focused educational platform evolves over 4 decades into a one-stop learning resource for future and practicing NPs.
1996—A New Wave in the Nursing Field
The number of NPs in the United States increases from 40,000 to more than 60,000, and the number of NP education programs outnumber all other nursing specialties. In 1998, the AANP creates The AANP Foundation Scholarship and Grant program, offering financial support for those seeking NP education.
September 11, 2001—Healing the Nation
In response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, nurse practitioners across the country convene in New York City and Washington DC to provide medical aid.
2004—Honoring NPs
National Nurse Practitioner Week, held annually in November, is recognized in a proclamation by U.S. Congress. In 2005, the NP field celebrates its 40-year anniversary.
2017—Hitting New Heights
There are more than 234,000 NPs in the U.S. by 2014, and the AANP surpasses 75,000 members.
Today—New Horizons Await
With more than 430,000 NPs practicing across the United States, practice authority rapidly grows. 27 states, including Washington DC, allow NPs to practice freely and care for patients holistically. New NP job opportunities open as demand continues to rise, with a spectrum of clinical concentrations available for NPs in all healthcare settings.
Despite humble beginnings, the NP profession has grown into a powerful presence in the global medical landscape. Each and every NP plays a crucial role in shaping the future of the profession—and Fitzgerald is here to support you in every step of your career journey.
