General Strategies in Diagnostic Reasoning

59

This module covers general strategies in diagnostic reasoning for AGACNPs, walking through a structured patient interview approach (open-ended ? focused ? yes/no questions), all components of a comprehensive health history (CC, HPI via OLDCARTS/PQRST, PMH, medications, habits, social/cultural factors, sexual history, family history, and ROS), and key communication tips. It then addresses the physical exam (systematic approach, correlating findings with ROS) and the appropriate use of diagnostics (always have a rationale, weigh risk vs. benefit, choose least invasive/least expensive). The module closes with synthesizing all findings into a coherent clinical picture and identifying common diagnostic reasoning errors to avoid — including anchoring bias, premature closure, and deferring to prior diagnoses.
