In this module, you will develop a foundational understanding of red blood cell and hemoglobin synthesis, and how these processes relate to the clinical presentation of anemia. Using key CBC parameters — including hemoglobin, MCV, MCHC, and RDW — you will learn to classify anemia into its three major categories: microcytic, macrocytic, and normocytic. Each type is examined in relation to its underlying pathophysiology, distinguishing features, and common causes, including iron deficiency, thalassemia, pernicious anemia, folate deficiency, acute blood loss, and anemia of chronic disease. The module concludes with an introduction to blood products and their appropriate clinical use, setting the stage for case-based application of these diagnostic concepts.
