The care of the transgender patient is different from that of other gender non-conforming and gender minority populations. The individual healthcare needs of the transgender population vary, and medical providers must evolve their treatment strategies accordingly. It is a well-documented fact that the majority of healthcare providers today have not been properly educated on how to care for the transgender population. This creates significant gaps in knowledge and clinical procedures that may lead to poor patient outcomes. It is not enough to be trans-friendly; it is essential to be trans-educated. As more persons identify as transgender, especially at younger ages, APRNs are in the forefront of caring for this underserved gender and sexual minority population. It is essential to the transgender patient’s well-being that their PCP is well versed and inclusive in the nuances and specialized care of this population.? This session offers a comprehensive overview of best practices for providing inclusive and gender-affirming healthcare to transgender individuals across all ages. We will explore the most current guidelines for transgender-focused healthcare and discuss pharmacology for gender-based hormone therapy.? Additionally, the presentation will review legal aspects of gender-affirming healthcare, including birth certificate amendments and concerns for elder transgender persons.? It is critical to use appropriate and culturally acceptable terminology and understand the training your office staff requires to provide care to those who are in need of culturally competent providers. This session will explore the unique medical, psychological, and social needs of transgender patients from childhood through adulthood, emphasizing a holistic and patient-centered approach. Participants will receive resources related to the most current evidence-based guidelines for the care of transgender patients, tailored exclusively to NPs.
